Tips for teens who want to talk with their parents are discussed in "Coming
Clean: How To Talk to Your Parents About Your Drug Use," found at:
ForReal (TEENS)
http://www.forreal.org/act/clean.asp

One of the most difficult parenting responsibilities is communicating with
teens about drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and sex.  Some adults may be
communicating ineffectively by using an extremely authoritative tone and
lecturing on the subjects.  Others may feel uncomfortable, embarrassed, or
frustrated and fail to discuss the subjects with their teens altogether.
Neither one of these options is healthy for teens.  A healthy approach to
communicating with teens means that you:
* Listen more than you talk
* Stay calm
* Remind teens that you love and care about them
* Take appropriate action
* Do your homework (i.e., take time to learn more about these subjects)
Theses tips are further discussed in "Talking With Your Teen," found at:
Reality Check (PARENTS)

Hot Tip

Look for natural experiences to talk with your kids/teens about drugs and alcohol. There are scenes from movies and TV that portray alcohol and or drugs being used- these would make for a discussion without confrontation.
