Are we doomed to
repeat an unhealthy past? This book tells, with humour, that there
is hope for the future. Several inspirational stories, including
the author's, describe efforts to break patterns of depression and
alcoholism passed on from mothers (and in some cases, fathers).
These women are using a number of techniques, including both
conventional and alternative medications and therapies:
psychoanalysis, massage therapy, reiki, yoga, herbal remedies and
chiropractic care to help them on their journey to healthier
lives. See how diet influences mood.. Research from literature,
and an analysis of the use of alcohol and drugs in popular culture
helps to put these personal stories into perspective. Also
included are reference charts, bibliography and list of resources,
including websites, for help.

Falkner
Books Where you'll find "I Would Be
Loved" by Linda Falkner.
In the early 1990's, at
the peak of the crack cocaine epidemic, the author, Linda Falkner,
became a foster parent. Most of her children were infants who had
been exposed to alcohol and drugs. Trying to help these children fit
into her home, and the world, was only the beginning of the
challenges she and her family faced. I WOULD BE LOVED is about kids
who were damaged by drugs, alcohol, abuse, and by the system meant
to protect them.
The older foster children had been emotionally, physically, and
often sexually abused. One foster child, a girl named Pixie, came to
live with the Falkner family after leaving foster care at eighteen.
She had grown up in hundreds of foster homes and was severely
mentally ill. Pixie lived with the Falkner's, on and off, for ten
years. In that time, they taught her many life skills, and tried to
let her know that she is loved -- but that was the hardest lesson of
all for her to learn. I Would Be Loved is Pixie's story as much as
it is Linda's.
Ten Real Tools For Real Life is a practical, personal
growth workbook for teens and adults. Readers learn and practice ten
basic skills of self-awareness, managing feelings and stress,
improving communication, and creating healthier relationships with
others. The workbook can be used by individuals or families, as well
as in the classroom, in support groups, in counseling sessions, in
treatment centers, or in detention facilities. Anyone who has an
interest in personal growth can benefit from this workbook and these
tools.
The information and activities in Ten Real Tools For Real Life
are clear and straightforward. They've been used effectively in all
of the above settings, and have been refined continually over the
past decade. Those who complete the workbook will have a solid
foundation of personal growth knowledge and skills that most people
never attain. With that foundation, they are better equipped to face
whatever challenges lie ahead for them.
The the tools include: "I" statements, the check-in
process, defenses, what's under anger, supportive feedback, the rage
bomb, communication styles, healthy boundary setting, the drama
triangle, and healthy outlets for anger and stress. Done in order,
the tools build on each other, and the reader is able to see the
connection between all the tools and how they work together.
Many books and workbooks are available on anger management and
communication skills. What makes this workbook different is that it
offers a practical combination of tools in a logical order,
including clear examples to follow and ample opportunity for
practicing the new skills and tools. Also, this particular
combination of tools is brief enough to be learned in a fairly short
period of time, but comprehensive enough to apply to a wide variety
of situations that teens and adults may face.

Hot Tip
Look for natural
experiences to talk with your kids/teens about drugs and
alcohol. There are scenes from movies and TV that portray
alcohol and or drugs being used- these would make for a
discussion without confrontation.
